Ice rotates on a first in, first out path, so the oldest ice is always the next ice out the door instead of compacting into a frozen mass at the bottom of the bin. A sliding ice gate meters the flow to a scoop or shovel and returns to the closed position automatically, which keeps the pile contained when a hurried employee walks away mid-fill.
