The rating is per layer, the number that matters when you load: a tier of canned goods here, a tier of mixer attachments there, without doing math against a single whole-cart figure. The three tiers mount on grooved posts, with 13 inches between the top and middle shelves and 19-1/2 inches between the middle and bottom shelves. The top shelf sits 4 inches below the top of the posts.
